Governors, senators, political
office holders and other stakeholders of the South-East met in Enugu yesterday,
insisting that the additional state for the South-East was not negotiable.
The Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, who declined to talk
much or entertain questions from newsmen simply, told inquisitive reporters
that issues of concern to the zone were discussed.
Obi said: “ We discussed issues concerning the zone. Issues that
bother on constitutional amendment and issues about security in the South-East.
“These were the two items on the agenda. But one thing we can say
that was concluded is that creation of additional state in the South-East is
not negotiable.”
The South-East has been clamouring for the creation of an
additional state to bring the number of states in the zone to six, to be at per
with other geopolitical zones.
Reaffirming the stance of the South-East leaders on the issue of
additional state, former President of Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo, Dr. Dozie Ikedife,
lambasted those against creation of new state for the zone, saying that they
were not God.
Apart from Governor Rochas Okorocha who was celebrating his
birthday, and Governor Sullivan Chime, who was on leave, the other three
governors attended the meeting.
Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Sunday Onyebuchi, represented his
governor, while Governors Martin Elechi, Ebonyi, Theodore Orji, Abia and Mr.
Peter Obi, Anambra attended.
Other personalites at the meeting, which held at the Enugu Governor’s
lodge included Senator Chris Ngige, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife among others.
